The cast iron cookware you inherited or bought from a thrift market often has a hard shell made of black rust and dirt, which looks very unpleasant. But don’t worry, it can be easily removed and the cast iron pot can be restored to its new appearance.
1. Put the cast iron cooker into the oven. Run the entire program once. It can also be burned on a campfire or charcoal for 1 / 2 hours until the cast iron cooker turns dark red. The hard shell will crack, fall off, and become ashes. Wait for the pan to cool down and take the following steps.If the hard shell and rust are removed, wipe with steel ball.
2. Wash the cast iron cooker with warm water and soap. Wipe with a clean cloth.
If you buy a new cast iron cooker, it has been coated with oil or a similar coating to prevent rusting. The oil must be removed before cooking utensils are disposed of. This step is essential. Soak in hot soapy water for 5 minutes, then wash off the soap and dry.
3. Let the cast iron cooker dry thoroughly. You can heat the pan on the stove for a few minutes to make sure it is dry. To deal with cast iron cookware, oil must be completely penetrated into the metal surface, but oil and water are incompatible.
4. Coat the inside and outside of the cooker with lard, all kinds of meat oil or corn oil. Pay attention to the pot cover.
5. Put the pan and lid upside down in the oven and use high temperature (150 – 260 ℃, according to your preference). Heat for at least an hour to form a “treated” outer layer on the surface of the pan. This outer layer can protect the pot from rust and adhesion. Place a piece of aluminum foil or a large baking tray paper under or at the bottom of the baking tray, and then drop the oil. Cool to room temperature in an oven.
